Purpose: To support and grow Millennium High School athletic programming and opportunities for its student-athletes.
Sports at Millennium: MHS achieved unprecedented on-the-field success with numerous teams making the playoffs over the past few seasons. The Girls Basketball team and Boys Baseball team narrowly missed advancing into the playoffs and the Fencing and Boys Basketball teams have repeatedly made it to the post-season. The Soccer Team has made the playoffs in each year of its existence and has made it to the City Semi-Finals for two consecutive seasons.
More Students, Smaller Budget: With a growing student body, shrinking budget, and increased interest in athletic teams it has become even more necessary for the MHS Athletic Department to become self-sufficient. In the past, the department has depended on funds from the Public School Athletic League (PSAL). These funds, while helpful, are entirely insufficient given the costs of establishing successful athletic teams and programs in the city. Our basketball programs have been aided in the past by Urban Dove, an inner-city youth charity that has been donating money to mitigate the cost of court time at the Chinatown YMCA and officials during scrimmage games. It is likely that Urban Dove will be unable to continue with this support in the coming years at the same level as they have in the past. In order to better fulfill the needs of our student-athletes and programs it is estimated that we will need to raise $8,000-$9,000 annually.
MHS and MBHS Join Forces: Millennium High School has partnered with Millennium Brooklyn High School in order to broaden our sports offerings and enable Brooklyn students to compete on Millennium sports teams. This partnership will give us access to some facilities at MBHS and will give MHS students the opportunity to enjoy additional sports teams in the coming years.
Need for Funding: The bulk of the MHS Athletic Department budget goes to uniform replacement, equipment, field rentals, officials during scrimmage or non-league competitions, travel subsidies for students, and fee exemptions for needy students. Past budgets have also included fees for outside advisors and coaches and sports banquets. In the future, the Athletic Department also hopes to provide scholarships for deserving student-athletes.
